It seems I’m on a roll learning
about the names in the Summerlin area. Since I live in Peccole Ranch, I thought
it was time to learn the history if its naming.
Fittingly, the name comes from a
gentleman named William P. “Bill” Peccole, who was a real estate developer,
city commissioner, insurance agent, shopping mall developer, and a lifetime
baseball fan. His love for baseball ran the range of a player in 1930s amateur
clubs and Elks club, to being a coach, all the way to building baseball parks,
including the ones at University of Nevada, Reno and University of Nevada, Las
Vegas.
Born December 18, 1913 in Stockton,
California, his high school education was in Sacramento, but his college degree
(history and physical education) was at University of Nevada, Reno. He served
in World War II as a physical education instructor and left the Army with
captain rank.
He married Wanda Lamb on January
24, 1953, with whom he had three daughters – Leann, Laurie, and Lisa. Bill and
Wanda were activists in the community with involvement in politics, education,
the arts, and community development. They developed or provided land for
Peccole Ranch, Sahara West Library, Durango Fire Station, Charleston Plaza
Mall, and Queensridge to name a few.
Bill Peccole passed away December
15, 1999, just two days short of his 86th birthday, though his name
lives on in our Las Vegas real estate communities.
